Oral Interpretation comes in a variety of forms, which makes it easier to find one that fits your comfort level and interest. For this unit, there are four categories from which to choose:
  • Prose Interpretation - dramatic reading of a short story, using the author's words and your voice to create the mood, scene, characters, and plot.
  • Poetry Interpretation - dramatic reading of a poem or series of poems with the same themes, using your voice to convey the meaning and theme of the selection(s).
  • Dramatic Performance - a dramatic performance of a play, short story, or script in which the performer portrays a single character (monologue) or multiple characters changing voices/mannerisms with limited platform movement.
  • Duo Interpretation - a dramatic performance in which two performers act out scenes of a play, short story, or script, portraying single or multiple characters without looking at their partner.

Note that the idea is to focus on the oral interpretation, meaning what you say and how you say it, rather than true acting or performing. WIth Prose and Poetry interpretation especially, the audience should be able to close their eyes and visualize the scene, characters, conflict, and setting.
